This is the short list of the most motivating, actionable resources I know about. They will – in the same breath – inspire you and show you how, exactly, to start kicking ass in this world.
These are the articles I always share with people I love and who are on an inspiring journey. These are the books I’ve bought for countless people in my life, saying “Man, you HAVE to read this!”.
Enjoy and share with the people you care the most about.
The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexander Dumas
This is my favorite book, both artistically and philosophically. Written by Alexander Dumas in the midst of Napoleon Bonaparte’s return to power in 1800’s France, it’s a gripping work of art that combines all the finest elements of swashbuckling pirate stories, tales of revenge & deceit, an epic love story, and – most importantly – a man who radically transforms himself out of will & necessity.
This novel brims with wisdom on creating a life that is of your will and no one else’s. Learn about the importance of having a mentor, building a new identity, finally seeing the fire in your heart, being relentless, and claiming your birthright. If you’re looking for motivation, this is it.
The Way of The Superior Man – David Deida
Merging the spiritual with the practical, this book offers tremendous wisdom on the true nature of being a masculine man. It is not the ‘beating on drums and peeing on trees’ men’s literature of the 1980s, nor is it the effeminate, apologetic, sensitive ‘masculinity’ touted by – well – feminists and marriage counselors. It’s goal is a merging of the tough, driven, pride-loving manliness we all know with the loving nature of a Man who truly cares for his woman, his family, and his posse.
Men, read this book because it will challenge you and give you insights you never knew possible with your masculinity, women, your career, and your calling in life. Women, read this to know what to inspire your man to become and to finally say, “Yes, this is the man I’m looking for!”.
Anyone who has taken the journey of personal transformation knows the obsession that comes with forging a new You, creating Yourself in the image of your wildest dreams. It’s exciting and it’s addictive. It’s my life. “The Education of Millionaires” extends this to your career and financial life, teaching you about the mindset of the true hustlers out there who created financial empires even though they have no formal education.
Rework – Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hanson
Fried & Hanson, co-founders of 37 Signals and creators of project management software such as Basecamp, take a contrarian view to running a business and have the success to prove it. This is business advice gone punk rock.
Sacrificing most of the sacred cows of business is the name of the game here. Perfection? Fuck it, hurry up and just launch. Trying to outdo your competitors? That’s ridiculous – change the rules of the game and underdo them. Think you need formal education? Not anymore you don’t.
The lessons in “Rework” have improved my time management skills, my ability to make quick & excellent decisions, how to bounce back from a fuck-up, and being quicker on my feet. Pick up this book and learn to streamline and accelerate your business like a true badass.
